The McDonnell 119 was a commercial airliner built in the United States in the late 1940s. It was designed to seat up to 44 passengers and was equipped with a pair of Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp radial engines. The aircraft had a maximum speed of 325 mph and a range of up to 1,600 miles.
The McDonnell 119 was built to compete with the Douglas DC-3, which was the most popular airliner at the time. However, McDonnell was unable to sell enough 119s to break into the market, particularly as the DC-3 had already established itself as a reliable and economical option.
In addition to its commercial use, the McDonnell 119 was also used by the US Air Force as a transport aircraft. It was first designated as the C-119 Flying Boxcar and later as the AC-119G Shadow, which was used as a gunship during the Vietnam War.
Today, only a few McDonnell 119s remain in existence and are primarily used for air shows and private flying.
